A Day at the Farm

Yesterday, we ventured out to the farm where our CSA vegetables are born – Great Country Farms in Bluefield, Virginia. We headed out to pick peaches and blackberries as part of our farm share. The farm is just a little over 60 miles west from Arlington, Virginia.

The farm offers plenty to do besides picking fruit. It was not overly crowded but we did notice that we were only one of three couples that did not have children in tow. There is a petting zoo, a playground and a giant inflatable bouncy pillow thing. (Tempting as it was, we did not bounce on it for fear of launching little children into the air.)

We took the hayride out to the rows and rows of U-Pick peach trees. We walked away with both white and yellow peaches. We opted to walk back so we could have a sneak preview of vegetables growing in the field that we’ll be receiving in the weeks to come – cabbages, tomatoes and squash.

We ended our visit by picking four pints of juicy blackberries. We succumbed to the temptation of eating them right off the vine. They were so good we couldn’t help it.

I’m looking forward to heading out again in the fall to pick our Halloween pumpkins.
