This weekend, Washington DC will be the center of attention with the inauguration of Barack Obama. Folks from all over will be streaming into the city, and the vegetarians will, of course, be looking for some great places to eat. Because I live in the heart of the action, I’ve put together a list of places where I’ve eaten several times and can vouch for the quality of the vegetarian food served. I have longer reviews planned in the future, but felt that it was a good time to give a general list for those visiting for the inauguration.

Enjoy your visit!

Vegetate Restaurant and Lounge

This sleek and modern restaurant is the best vegetarian restaurant in the area that is not Asian or Indian food inspired. It’s located in Washington DC and reservations are definitely recommended. Their seasonal menu always has something for everyone on it…even to satisfy carnivore in your life. If you can’t decide what to get, order lots of different dishes and share with the others at the table. You’ll be glad that you found this place. Their website gives great directions on how to get to their restaurant:

We encourage people to use public transportation to get to Vegetate for a variety of reasons, though most immediately parking is very limited; and we are located directly in between two metro stops. North of us is the Shaw/Howard stop on the green line; from there walk one block west to 9th street, then three blocks south to 1414.  South of us is the Mt. Vernon Square/Convention Center stop on the yellow or green line; from there walk west to 9th street through the Convention Center underpass, then three blocks north to 1414. You can also use the new DC Circulator bus, which stops across the street at 9th and O.

1414 Ninth St. N.W. (at O Street), Washington, DC
Driving directions can be found here.

Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant

Unfortunately, both Sunflower locations will require you to have a car or to take the bus. The original Sunflower is located in Vienna, Virginia. It’s a little cramped location filled with kitschy sunflower inspired knick-knacks. It’s very casual and the food is oh-so-good. The newest Sunflower is located in Seven Corners. This location is a bit larger and has a more modern feel. But don’t worry, it still has their trademark sunflower inspired motif. The food is equally as good as it is in the Vienna location.

The food is Japanese-inspired but they boast an expansive menu that has faux meat options galore. (I’m a fan of the General Tso’s surprise…) You definitely walk away with a full stomach after eating at Sunflower.

Delhi Dhaba

Located near the Courthouse Metro station in Virginia, Delhi Dhaba serves one of the best vegetarian Indian food selections in the area. From palak paneer and chole to freshly baked naan and samosas, Delhi Dhaba will satisfy you. There is another, more “upscale”, location in Bethesda that is also located close to metro. (I have not yet been to the location in DC but provided address details below.) The Arlington location also delivers within a three mile radius which is handy because parking can sometimes be a bit dicey there.

Hard Times Cafe

The weather forecasters are calling for cold, cold weather the weekend of inauguration. What’s better than a bowl of chili to warm you up? Hard Times Cafe serves several types of chili – including an excellent and filling vegetarian chili. Add cheese, onions, sour cream and you’ve got a decadent and warming meal on your hands. There are several locations in the DC area but I’ve only been to the Arlington location. It’s easy to get to because it’s right across from the Clarendon Metro station.
