Hallelujah! Rebel Heroes is here to save lunch as we know it. This Vietnamese and Cuban fusion food truck hit the streets in Arlington a few weeks ago and they have become so popular they haven’t been able to keep up with sandwich demand. Let the rebellion begin!
For us vegetarians, there are two tofu sandwiches on the menu – tofu banh mai and tofu libre. You can then mix and match a variety of ingredients including mayonnaise including lime mayo, chipotle mayo or their own Rebel Mayo which features a subtle zing of sriracha. But, it doesn’t stop there, they have other toppings for the sandwiches including cilantro, pickled daikon and carrots, scallions, cucumber, sliced jalapenos, and mustard.
Honestly, I was so overwhelmed with all the selections that I went the easy route and ordered the tofu libre sandwich as-is. It was pressed with pickles, rebel mayo and swiss cheese. Next time, I’ll start mixing and matching some of the toppings but even as-is, this sandwich was phenomenal.
From the first bite, I knew that this wasn’t going to be the same old tofu sandwich. The bread was fresh and crisp and the taste of the sandwich was warm, crisp, zesty and delicious.
Due to the truck’s popularity, be prepared to wait for your sandwich a little bit. In Rosslyn, they grew an excited crowd so wait time was about 10-15 minutes. Omnivore friends may find some of the meat items sold-out due to their popularity, so get to the truck early if you don’t want to be disappointed.
