On a lazy Sunday, I headed over to my local My Organic Market (MOMs). I picked up vegetables, various meat substitute products, some spices and other ingredients for some upcoming recipes. As I rounded the last corner, I came upon the freezers holding prepared meals. It’s at that moment that my eye hit upon something I was surprised to see – a vegan pepperoni pizza. That’s right, Tofurky, the masters of faux meat products, have done it again by introducing a new line of vegan pizzas.

I opened up the freezer door, trying to hold my giddiness in check. As I stared at the box, a couple pushed their cart by and the woman squealed, “pepperoni pizza!” I suppose I wasn’t the only one thrilled with this find.

I put the box in my cart, picked up some Dale’s Pale Ale and headed to the register. Tonight was going to be pizza night!

Let’s be honest, it’s certainly not the prettiest pizza on the block – but who’s trying to win a beauty pageant? The pizza right out of the box really isn’t that spectacular looking.

The back of the box tells the story of the research and development of this new pizza. Taste and texture weren’t going to be spared so who cared what it looked like.

The pepperoni completely covered the top of the pizza. Not an inch was bare.

The pepperoni was reminiscent of the little squares found on the pizza in the school lunchroom that I had growing up. But, it was less greasy and much spicier. As a result of the pepperoni being omnipresent, the pizza was packed with robust flavor. The Tofurky pizza uses the vegan cheese Daiya which purports to melt and taste like regular cheese. With the plethora of pepperoni I barely noticed the cheese but I did note that it did melt quite well and I didn’t think, “ew, vegan cheese.”

It’s a thin crust pizza so if you are feeding more than two people, you might want to stock up on more than one – especially if your crowd is hungry. (Sure, the serving size on the back of the box is 1/3 of the pizza…but it’s seriously so darn good that you’ll find yourself eating a lot more than you had originally planned.)

Ok, I’ll admit, I can hear the ardent meat eater now after they take a bite of the pizza, “It’s doesn’t taste like pepperoni.” My response, “Who cares?” Honestly, there is no earthly way actual pepperoni can be mimicked but the spicy and smoky spirit of pepperoni can.

The Tofurky pepperoni pizza is a nice treat. It may not look gourmet but if you’re looking for an easy meal it fits the bill. I will pick another one up the next time I’m in the store. Or, maybe I’ll try their Italian sausage with fire roasted veggies or use their cheese pizza as the base when I build my own pizza. Decisions, decisions.

  1. Thanks so much for this. This might sound weird, but I spent the first few years of my teenage lifein Sicily, then travelled all over the globe. Now I’m living in Australia, with my Chinese wife, and son we had whilst in Japan! Truly internationalized, eh? Anyway, I’ve been trying to rediscover the smells and tastes of my youth with some authentic Italian recipe like these, best I’ve found so far! Thanks again, I’ll see if I can add the feed to my google reader tonight, though my son usually does that for me!
