Elmo and Sam Kass, White House Chef, Do the Melon Dance

Elmo celebrates the recently passed Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act with White House Chef Sam Kass by learning about healthy food options. The new Act provides more money for the National School Lunch Program and also updates nutrition standards for school lunches which includes decreasing the amount of starchy vegetables and eliminating trans fats.  In the video below, Elmo gets excited about all the veggie options that would be available to him once he gets into school.

Elmo’s jubilation will probably be short-lived.  Jamie Oliver, a man on a mission to improve school lunches, was recently prohibited from working with the Los Angeles School District on his Food Revolution series. And, if you want an “in the trenches” view of school lunches check out “Fed Up With Lunch“. I’m honestly aghast at some of meals kids are served, so lets hope the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act can help change some of this.

Vegans Take America

On Point with Tom Ashbrook” tackles the topic of being vegan in America. Once considered a “fringe diet” veganism is now more mainstream. The show spends 47 minutes discussing the topic with Kim O’Donnel author of The Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook, Isa Chandra Moskowitz author of the Post-punk Kitchen blog, Mollie Katzen author of the Moosewood Cookbook and Susan Nitzke, chair of the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Wisconsin. As with any discussion on veganism, there is usually a hearty debate between vegans and omnivores and the comment section for this program is no exception.

Pick a Bigger Popper

All hail the NuMex Jalmundo – a giant jalapeno designed for bigger poppers. Hooray for science for allowing a larger delivery device for cheezy fried goodness!
