If you’re in the Triangle region of North Carolina and looking for a splurge that’s worth the pricetag, head to Herons.
Tucked inside The Umstead Hotel and Spa, this restaurant went above and beyond the call of service to feed this vegetarian. If you choose to go with the tasting menu, all diners at the table must participate. This can be daunting when you’re the lone vegetarian because you don’t want to deny the omnivores from their fun. But, Herons stepped up to the challenge. The chef not only created vegetarian dishes for me but they also paired the appropriate wine to go with the creation. Best of all, one of our servers was a vegan so he was thrilled to see what was being created and what was coming out of the kitchen by the chef.
While I did not take notes of each of the dish, I was able to sneak some snapshots in during my meal. I think they capture the diversity and beauty of the plates. And, I can attest that the flavors were exquisite. If you’re not interested in the tasting menu, then they also have many vegetarian options on the menu including ricotta ravoli, winter roots and a butter lettuce salad with beets, goat cheese mouse, pistachio and mandarin vinaigrette. These options are most likely part of a seasonal menu, so you might want to check their website or call ahead for their latest menu.
If you are going to go for the tasting menu, it’s probably best to let them know about your vegetarian option when making the reservation so that they can be prepared at your arrival.
